Pony keg gas tank, with wheel "knock-off" as the gas cap. The keg is marked John Hauenstein Brewery. Dated 1961. John Hauenstein Sr. was the founder of the Hauenstein Brewing Company. Born in Bavaria, Germany, he came to Ohio with his parents when he was 21. His parents both died in a cholera epidemic in Ohio. John Hauenstein moved to New Ulm, MN in 1857, and in 1862 married Henrietta Fritsche daughter of Johann Carl & Fredricka (Ries) Fritsche. They had 7 children. Mr. Hauenstein helped defend New Ulm during the 1862 Sioux Uprising. He joined the 1st Minnesota Mounted Rangers & was a 2nd Lieutenant. In 1864 he started a brewery along with Andrew Betz. John Hauenstein eventually became the sole owner of the brewery. After 106 years, the Hauenstein Brewing Co. closed on January 1, 1970. Very cool breweriana AND automobilia collector piece!
