<p><p>Wright is proud to present Modernists 20, modernist design from the collection of Michael and Gabrielle
Boyd. The first in an elite series, Wright offers the collection of a single modernist at auction. A selection
of pieces in the sale were exhibited at the 1998 San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA)
exhibition, "Sitting on the Edge, the collection of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd", curated by Aaron Betsky,
current head of the NAI (Netherlands Architecture Institute). Many pieces being offered were published in
the Rizzoli book, Sitting on the Edge.

<p>In addition to their modernist design collection, Michael and Gabrielle Boyd have been architectural
preservationist on a number of modernist structures, the 1970’s Paul Rudolph town house in New York
city, the 1962 Thornton Ladd "House for a Writer" in Santa Barbara, and currently the Oscar Niemeyer
Strick House of 1964 in Santa Monica.

<p>Included with the Modernists 20 auction catalog is a limited edition book "20"Twenty Questions. Twenty
Objects. A Conversion with Michael Boyd and Peter Fiell. London based author, Fiell has lectured widely,
curated a number of exhibitions and written numerous books on design, including Taschen’s 1000 Chairs
and Design of the Twentieth Century, the six volume decorative arts series. The catalog and limited edition
book will be first available at an opening reception and selected preview on August 21st in Los Angeles at
the new home of Michael and Gabrielle Boyd, The Strick House of 1964 in Santa Monica, the only
residence built in North America by architect Oscar Niemeyer.

<p>From the early 20th century, highlights of the sale include an exceptional Second Version of Mrs.
Cranston’s Tea Room chair, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a rare side chair for the poet Richard
Dehmel by Peter Behrens, and a side chair for the Larkin Administrative Building by Frank Lloyd Wright.
An academic collection of Bauhaus design highlights the early 20th century with furniture by Marcel Breuer
and Mies van der Rohe, and artwork by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Josef Albers, and Max Bill. Mid Century
Modern is well represented in the sale with works by Americans Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson,
Isamu Noguchi, Europeans Franco Albini, Jean Prouve, and LeCorbusier, and Scandinavians Finn Juhl,
Paul Kjaerholm and Hans Wegner. An exceptional George Nelson and Associates Marshmallow Sofa
estimated $30,000 - 40,000 and a Standard Desk by Jean Prouve estimated at $20,000 - 30,000, are among
the top offerings of Mid Century Modern. A premier collection of work by Gerrit Rietveld will be offered
as well with a Beugelstoel from 1927 and a writing desk from the 1940’s as highlights.

<p>An emphasis on California Modernist outdoor furnishings is being offered with numerous quality
examples. The sale includes furniture by Van Keppel/Green, Brown Jordan, Vista of California, and
ceramics by Architectural Pottery.
Wright will be open for viewing from the 3rd through the 13th of September, daily 10 a.m to 5 p.m. The
auction will be held in Chicago on Sunday September 14, 2003 at 12:00 p.m.
