Modern gold commemorative medal, inauguration of 29 Aug
Modern gold commemorative medal, inauguration of 29 August 1963: three portraits (Kennedy on left), with a symbolic handshake beneath them, reverse with flags of Mexico and the USA. Plain edge, As Struck with a lovely appearance. Weight: 42.67 grams (slightly heavier than a 50 Pesos coin).
This medal celebrates the conclusion of an old boundary dispute near El Paso, TX. The shifting Colorado River made the 600 acres of this area "move" from one country to the other (when the war between Mexico and the United States ended, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo specified that the Rio Grande would be the legal boundary between the two countries) and this upset citizens by "challenging their nationality." The problem continued for more than 100 years. In 1963, JFK and Mexican President Adolfo Lopez Mateos met, at Kennedy's instigation, and proposed, for diplomatic purposes, to move the Rio Grande back to its original position of 1864 when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. The U.S. established a park on its side of the Colorado River, as did Mexico, which it called El Parque Del Chamizal. It is built on the piece of land that Mexico acquired as a settlement of the treaty dispute. This large gold medal commemorates the event as well as the Chamizal National Memorial on the site where the dispute was settled.
From the Monedas Oro Collection

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
