Moche Stirrup-spout CeramicVessel: Seated Figure
Stirrup-spout Vessel: Seated Figure
Moche (Early)
100 B.C. - A.D. 200
Burnished blackware
Height 6 1/4 in. Width 4 7/8 in.

This alert-looking seated figure with carefully defined hands resting on its knees evidences the energetic, highly finished carving characteristic of Early Moche ceramics. A subtly distended left cheek indicates that the subject is engaged in chewing coca. Inlaid elements are another early component (in this example the eye inlays are new replacements). Altogether the vessel became a convincing stand-in for an actual individual, thus early establishing the qualities of insightful realism for which Moche art is known. Condition is good, with minor surface restorations.

Provenance
David Bernstein, New York
