Diameter 7 ½ in.

A crown of such unadorned design is very difficult to place culturally when the provenance is lacking. This example is formed of a plain gold primary crown form, to which elegant, spiral-decorated danglers have been attached at the top and along the lower rim. The condition is generally good, but a few danglers are missing. There are many complex ancient stains, one area suggesting contact with a necklace with rectangular pendant components. On the front half multiple disk-shaped impressions of clear gold are surrounded by a cloudy field with some corroded cloth evidence. Thus the crown gives at least ghostly hints of the elaborate, perhaps royal costuming of which it was once a part.

Provenance
Bonhams & Butterfields, San Francisco: sale 7437E, 9 June 2003, lot 5105, pp.24-25

Published
Jose Antonio de Lavalle, Editor, Oro del Antiguo Peru, Banco del Credito del Peru, Lima, 1972, p. 106, ill.93

Important notice:<
