Miwok-Paiute Coiled Basket
Circa 1910
Height 5 1/8 in. Diameter 10 in.

This well made bowl is decorated with a variety of complex geometric forms in red (redbud) and black (bracken fern) floating against the tan (sedge root) background. Design elements include diamonds, four point stars, and four large six point forms with serrated edges. During the early years of the 20th century, Miwok and Paiute weavers found a ready outlet for their baskets at nearby Yosemite National Park. "The Indian Field Days, a rodeo and fair held annually in Yosemite Valley between 1916 and 1929, further impressed upon weavers the salability of new-style baskets. Sponsored by the National Park Service and several park concessionaires, the purpose of the Field Days was 'to revive and maintain interest of Indians in their own games and industries, particularly basket and bead work'." Basket competitions were held and prizes awarded. This stimulated keen competition which led to design innovations and baskets of spectacular scale and quality.

Provenance
Russell Kloer, Sonoma, California.

Important notic
