Missouri War Axe Tomahawk w/ Beaded Drop c. 1820
The lot features an excellent and rare early Missouri War Axe Tomahawk from the 19th Century. The circa 1820’s piece is out of a large collection of Central Plains material and is likely Pawnee or Sauk and Fox in origin. The blacksmith hand-forged iron head having a small weeping heart cutout in the center and three large pieced holes surrounding. There is a small punch dot decoration around the blade edges on both sides. The piece is secured to the hardwood haft handle which is adorned with brass trade tacks and at the bottom end has a serrated staircase cut; an early documented feature seen on early Missouri War Axes. See Baldwin, Hartzler & Knowles and Peterson for published examples. The tomahawk war club also shows a unique 10-inch-long beaded and fringed buckskin drop that has two additional strands of old tarnished brass beads with a large black bear claw attached to each. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Cyrus Eaton Estate of London, England. Truly a nice early example with an even patina. The head measures 6.25” long and 3.75” across the blade being overall 17.5”L.
