This is an exceptional Mississippian Native American Indian Culture massive carved pipe. The piece is marked on the bottom, "WYCLIFF MOUND KY PF13A4." The Wickliffe Mounds is a prehistoric, Mississippian culture archaeological site located in Ballard County, Kentucky, near the town of Wickliffe (founded in 1000 CE and abandoned in 1350 CE). Archaeological research have linked the site with others along the Ohio River in Illinois and Kentucky as part of the Angel Phase in Mississippian culture. This is one of the largest, if not the largest, example of any recovered Mississippian culture tobacco pipes. The piece shows a bent over human figure with chin or mouth resting on a pole emerging from the ground. Measures 10.5"L x 4.25"D x 7 1/8"H. Bowl opening is 1 3/8" with the connection being 5/8".
