Mississippi rifle by Tryon of Philadelphia dated 1854 showing dovetail on the right side of barrel for mounting of stud for a long saber bayonet. The stud has been removed. The rifle is still in .52 caliber and shows removal of the front sight and replacement of the back sight. The lock markings are visible and the breach shows a J.H. over P inspection. The stock shows an old refinish with many chips, small losses and some large losses around the butt plate. The metal surfaces on the barrel and lock show light to slightly heavy pitting and most of the heavy pitting is occurring on the lock. These Mississippi rifles were in southern and northern armories when the war broke out and the shortening of the stock for addition of the saber bayonet may indicate Civil War use. The ramrod is the correct age but badly rusted. Est.: $600 -$1,200.
