Mississippi rifle by E. Whitney dated 1851 in .54 caliber percussion with muzzle turned for bayonet of the type altered for use by New Jersey troops. Refer Flayderman 9A – 281 which identifies this rifle as the adaptation of 1859 where sight was located on bayonet. The rifle remains in good to very good condition showing a light gray to brown patina finish with some scattered minor erosion and pinprick pitting mostly at the firing areas of the breech and drum area. The lock markings are good and there is some pitting on the front and back of lock. The stock is very good plus with some dings, mars, dents, scratches and normal military use but shows 3 good cartouches including N.J. above the side plate and stamped at the rear end of the barrel. The action is good, bores good and generally good overall with a very pleasing dark patina on the brass. This rifle is from an old time East Coast dealers collection who specialized in Martial arms who states that he only viewed 3 of these rare New Jersey alterations in 50 years of dealing and collecting. Est.: $3,000-$6,000.
