Miscellaneous World Medals. Five items for various collector interests: the first and by far the largest commemorates Laura Maria Caterina Bassi (1711-1778), a professor of anatomy at the University of Bologna at the age of 21, the first female to teach at a college in Europe, the obverse depicts her facing left with legends around her portrait, the reverse depicts Minerva and Philosophy and emblems of learning, engraved by Antonio Laazan, about 70 mm, weight 101.2 gm, struck in bronze and gold-plated; a flattened button, either Civil War-era or before, belonging to the U.S. Infantry's 38th Regiment; an unnamed Crimean silver military medal made into a broach, which would have been presented to a member of the French military for service in the Crimea; a silver religious medallion made in Italy; and a letter opener made during World War I by a German POW, using a piece of metal and used bullet and shell. An interesting lot, which we recommend be viewed.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
