Historical academic mineral collection consisting of a lot of 70+ mineral specimens - collected primarily within the eastern U. S. Samples range up to 4 inches and constitute a wide range of both common and rarer mineral specimens. Notable pieces within this lot include multiple mounted examples of brookite and rutile crystals all from Magnet Cove, AR, a beautiful pseudomorph of aphrosiderite after garnet, cancrinite - an unusual and rare example of the feldspathoid group - and crystalline babingtonite, a relatively unknown calcium iron silicate from the Hampden Quarry, Springfield, MA. Pieces of antiquity include the Fe-Mg ore chondrodite from the Tilly Foster Mine, Brewester NY. Originally underground, this mine was one of the first open pit operations in the US. With the mine disaster of 1895, the pit was flooded and samples are no longer available for collection. This lot also includes an example of catlinite - a red variey of argillite - prized by the native americans for its workability in sacred pipes. This sample was collected from the Pipestone Natural Monumnet, MN prior to its placement into the public lands trust. Additional mineral speices contained include allanite, anorthite, apatite, barite rose, beryl, bronzite, celestite, corundum, diaspore, forsterite, heterosite, kyanite, lepidolite, margarite, serpentine, sillimanite, stilpnomelane, spodumene, titanite, thompsonite, tremolite and wernerite among others. Ore pieces within this lot include chromite and two specimens of zaratite - a rare secondary nickel carbonate - from the Woods Mine, Lancaster Co., PN, bismuthinite collected from the Germania Mine, WA, and pentlandite from an unknown location. This photo only represents a portion of the total lot. Not all of the pieces in this lot were photographed.
