Fine, stylized comb and relief-carved walnut stock. Owned by a prominent member (or members) of the De la Garza family during second portion of 18th Century. Finely engraved at the wrist in silver, with the crest of the de la Garza family, (Grandes de Espana), highest-ranking members of the Spanish nobility. By Mid-16th century, members of the de la Garza family, most notably Marcos Alonso Garza y del Arcon, had come to New Spain as soldiers and explorers. Between 1596-1603, the family had settled in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. A surname very seldom seen in Spain, it is quite well known across Mexico and intertwined with the history of Texas. Miguel de la Garza Falcon (1699-1753), officer and colonist, explored farther up the Rio Grande than any other explorer before the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848. Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon (1712-1767), noted explorer, colonizing much of what is now South Texas. Juan Jose de la Garza Falcon, (1736-1796), established ranches which would later become Brownsville, Texas in 1848. Double smooth-bore 35" barrels, wooden ramrod with silver embellished loop stays, fore-end and trigger guard. Silver embellishments can also be seen at the buttstock, and at De la Garza family crest in between checkering at the wrist. Floral and Deity carvings into dark wood stock. Antique.
