Measures 5.5” x 3.5”, Description reads “Looking south Pioneer Nev.” Produced by Welch & Tune Photo of Goldfield. Mailed to Virginia City on 19 March 1909 from Goldfield. Green 1 cent revenue stamp located on the back. The postcard shows the small mining town just developing. There are some wooden structures, but many are still tents. The mining town of Pioneer sprung up in the early 20th century. When Rhyolite’s mines began to fail, many business and miners moved to Pioneer to start over. By 1909 the town’s population grew to 3,000 and boasted over 300 buildings. But just as quickly as the town began, the mines began to fail. Some residents did remain in the town, but by the 1940s the town was all but a memory [Ref: Western Places, 7 (4): 11–20]. -58879
