Mining Memorabilia. An original dipping needle compass. Spun brass shell and cover, 2 7/8 " diameter, 3/4 " thick. Glass window containing 2 1/2 " long needle, mounted on bracket from bottom, with precisely calibrated dial. Unmarked but found in Penna., and judged c. 1890-1905. Large metal loop. An engineering instrument used in mining and geology to find gold and silver ores. Dipping needle compasses have been in use since about 1640. With instructions. Light wear, else fine.
