This exquisitely painted scene features an incredible wealth of detail which captures the viewer’s gaze.

The miniature shows some tears and creases along the borders as well as a retouched loss to the lower margin. There are some small stains to the background, especially the sky. The mat is damaged. The sheet is laid on paper and on the verso mounted under a mat with adhesive tape. The image section measures 34 x 49.3 cm.

Company School

The company school is a stylistic movement in Indian painting, developed in Bengal around the second half of the 18thcentury. The artworks, often watercolors or gouache paintings, mostly show everyday scenes from Indian life, religious festivals and portraits of rulers. The school combines the traditions of Indian miniature painting with European style and developed under the rule of the British East India Company. It was supposed to capture the exotic and picturesque elements of Indian life for the British and European markets.
