This book is responsible for the introduction of the “art” of mining to the world. Simonin had produced a book that made mining exciting. Before, mining books were typically dull and technical. Readers could now be transported to the underground, with bright and colorful plates that brought to life the detail of Simonin's words. The book also hit at a time when the world was hungry for knowledge of mining, due to the mass migration of people to the American West. It’s easy to see why this book was so popular, the fantastic illustrations and geological information pop out at the reader. Demand and popularity cause for several copies to be printed in Paris, London and New York City. The front cover shows an embossed safety lamp, and other miner’s tools. The prints are fantastically detailed and colorful, and have very little wear. First English Edition, by L. Simonin translated by H.W. Bristow. Illustrated with 160 engravings on wood, 20 maps geologically colored, and 10 plates of metals and materials. Printed in London by William Mackenzie 22 Paternoster Row. Some wear, the binding is slightly detached, but book remains together, although in some spots, the string is starting to wear. Cover has wear, including some tears and creases. - Ken & Rosemary Roberts Collection -59299
