c1880-Lot of 3: antique brass miner`s safety lamps, intact with glass and hanging hooks. These are heavy pieces, with cast brass screw-off bases, and long metal vented chimneys. The hanging hooks are quite substantial. The largest measures 12" tall to the hook loop, and is 3.5" in dia. There is a cast in number on the base. The glass in marked "Baccarat France." The next size down measures 10.5" tall, and is 3.5" in dia. The name "O2 Ostler" is cast into the iron vented riveted chimney. The smallest measures 9" tall x 3.25" in dia. There are screens visible inside the chimneys, which are the effective flame extinguishers. Sir H. Davy is generally credited with inventing the flame safety lamp. He determined to isolate the flame by means of a wire gauze. He found that the flammable gases passing through a mesh of 28 steel wires per inch so cooled & broke up the flame that it was extinguished. HKA#64441
