Measures 10.5”, and made out of a polished steel. THE MINERS BABY is engraved on the thimble. STEEL and PAT APD FOR on the spike The Miners baby thimble was a patent created by John J. Cluin. This is an extremely rare item. Only 3 or 4 others are known to still exist. To operate the Miners Baby, one just simply pulls on the ring by the hook. “This disengages the hook shaft from the slot and allows it and the thimble to be rotated into a flat position. When the ring is released a spring pulls the hook shaft back into a locking slot.” The handle looks to have been hollowed out at some point and possibly could have been a high grader’s handle. It has since been filled in. Wilson 224, RSC 79. - Ken & Rosemary Roberts Collection -59143
