Mimi Sheraton Letter Signed on Personal Letterhead. Two Pages, 10 1/4" x 7 1/4"; November 3, 1956

A scathing letter addressed to Mr. Paul C. Smith, President of the Crowell-Collier Publishing Company. Sheraton had allegedly been stood up for two arranged meetings with the Editor, Theodore Strauss.

She writes, in part:

"I am a magazine editor of some standing in the woman's field, with an unqualified record of success on several leading magazines. I have tried to see Mr. Strauss with some ideas for the Companion for many months... one would think you'd be so open to ideas, that you would place a gigantic suggestion box in the street outside of your building, in the hope that some passer-by would have an insight into something your editorial staff overlooked... I have been a magazine executive for nine years and have never found it essential to be as rude to anyone taking the time and interest to suggest ideas concerning my publication. I realize that this letter obviates any possibility of my working for Crowell-Collier. It is with that not-too-gloomy prospect in mind that I send this off to you."

Included with the letter is a carbon copy of the reply from Paul C. Smith, which notes "I regret any set of circumstances which would produce a letter such as yours of November 3rd."

Sheraton went on to become a noted American food critic.
