Mimbres Wood Bow and Arrow
Mimbres Wood Bow and Arrow
Circa 1000-1200 AD
Length 53 3/4 in. the bow; Length 35 in. the arrow

This ancient wooden bow is wrapped with sinew at various points along its length. Pitch residue is also present. The bow is accompanied by a single reed arrow with a foreshaft with a flint point.
Cached in caves, bows and arrows from the prehistoric Southwest have survived the ravages of time and weather. A group of three, nearly identical to this example, is illustrated in Forrest Fenn's collection. "The bow and arrow made their appearance in America about two thousand years ago…The three Southwest bows shown here could have been made as long ago as 1150. All are wrapped with sinew bands around the shafts, which are nearly circular in cross section. Such wrappings are designed to increase the force of the bow as well as to prevent the wood from shivering from the vibrations of firing...These bows have no nocks to hold the bowstring in place. They rely upon the strings end nooses and the wrappings, as well as the tapering tips, to keep the strings in place."

Provenance
Richard Corrow Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Important notic
