This is an excellent prehistoric Mimbres Pictorial Mountain Goat Big Horn Sheep Spirit pottery bowl from circa 950-1150 A.D. The piece is marked across the bottom, "Mimbres MT Goat..." along with the museum identification and museum number. The piece is believed to have been deaccessioned from a museum collection. The piece is an exceedingly rare item as it is in pristine condition for its age with nearly all examples being repaired or glued (this piece shows no visible cracks, no glue, no restoration, no overpaint, and only a small 1/4" chip on the edge). The piece shows a black on white painted design with the fantastic Mountain Goat pictorial design and linear design around the top edge. Provenance: From a private Montana Native American & Western collection. The bottom shows a burnt patina and is marked with the museum identification. This is one of the finest Mimbres Native American culture pottery pictorial bowls every offered for sale and is truly an important museum quality piece. Measures 2.75"H x 5 7/8" diameter.
