Milton Caniff - Original Comic Strip Art for Terry and the Pirates dated 1-1-42 and 1-7-42 (News Syndicate Co., 1942). Fondly remembered as the strip that made Milton Caniff a star, Terry and the Pirates told the story of Terry Lee and his adult sidekick Pat Ryan, and their adventures in the mysterious Far East. Making its newspaper debut in 1934, Terry was popular enough in 1937 to graduate to his own radio show and, in 1940, a movie serial based on his adventures was released. Caniff left the strip in 1946 to create Steve Canyon, a work in which he owned "a piece of the action," unlike his situation with Terry. Continued by the talented George Wunder (and often ghosted by Superman artist Al Plastino), the strip lived on until its cancellation in 1973. The examples offered here, however, are pure Caniff, exhibiting the drama and excitement that was a hallmark of his work. Each strip measures approximately 23" x 6.5" overall, and both are in excellent condition. One of the most significant strips in cartoon history, these will be a thrilling addition to any collection. 2 items Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
