Milton Caniff - Original Comic Strip Art for St
Milton Caniff - Original Comic Strip Art for Steve Canyon Sunday dated 6-1-52 (Field Enterprises, Inc., 1952). Milt Caniff had a definite hit on his hands with Terry and the Pirates. A huge success from its debut in 1934, Caniff requested, and was denied, ownership of Terry in 1946, which caused him to quit the title and create Steve Canyon. An even bigger hit for the cartoonist, Steve Canyon told the story of Horizons Unlimited, a small aviation concern that routinely took on dangerous assignments, most with noticeable Cold War elements. This strip is a superb example of Caniff's facility as both artist and writer. His heavy use of blacks, his mastery of facial expressions, his dynamic pacing and storytelling... all of these things mark Caniff as a true master. This page is interesting, in that it is made up of individual panels that have been adhered to a larger board. Caniff has then gone in and touched up the borders where necessary. Measuring approximately 26.5" x 20.5" overall, and in good condition, there is a certain amount of glue discoloration around the panels and some evidence of tape holding the panels in place, but these are relatively minor concerns that affect the art very little. The third-to-last panel bears the inscription, "To [name whited out], Best Wishes, Milton Caniff, NY, Sept 1957." This is a great early Canyon for anyone who collects the best in comic strip art. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
