Milton Caniff - Original Comic Strip Art for Di
Milton Caniff - Original Comic Strip Art for Dickie Dare Daily dated 2-22-34 (The A.P., 1934). Although this strip ran for 25 years, it is largely forgotten today. However, it occupies an important place in the history of comic strips, as it represents the first published work of a young Milton Caniff. While toiling as a journeyman cartoonist on several minor Associated Press Features, Caniff received word that the syndicate was looking for filler strips. Working feverishly over the weekend, Caniff created Dickie Dare, an adventure strip about a young boy with a voracious appetite for books, and a boundless imagination, who found himself involved in imaginary adventures with heroes he had read about from both history and fiction. Quick to recognize the youngster's talent, A.P. bought the strip, and Caniff's career took off from there. Before long, Caniff would leave Dickie Dare in other hands to bring life to Terry and the Pirates, the strip that would truly immortalize him on the comic page. The strip offered here, featuring Dickie and Sir Dagonet, as well as Dickie's dog Wags, measures approximately 25.25" x 6" overall and is in excellent condition. An inscription in red pen in the lower margin reads, "For Murphy Harris - Best Wishes, Milton Caniff, N.Y. July 1970." It is also signed by the artist in the last panel. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
