Milton 3E25F.2g 25¢ Third Issue Experimental Bloc
Milton 3E25F.2g 25¢ Third Issue Experimental Block of Four Gem New. Previously lot 1094 of our January 1997 Sale, where it was described, "This block was originally offered in the Sotheby's November 5, 1985 Sale as a block of six, but the two pieces at the right were severed and sold, each to a separate collector. The block that [Milt Friedberg] retained contains four incredible Fessenden proofs, the two at the left having the position letter 'a.' The block is clearly from the upper left corner of the plat, as the impression of the edge of the plate is visible. Each of the three notes has three round hole cancels, but in the bottom left note the hole in Fessenden's face was not fully punched and the paper is still present. This is an item of incredible significance, as no experimental multiples from this or any other third issue denomination are known with the position letter present. The condition is spectacular, with all four notes and the block itself grading Gem New, with full original brightness of both the paper and ink." Eight years ago this block realized $2,750, and was one of the great bargains from the Friedberg Sale, having carried an estimate of $6,000-up.
