<B>Milton 2E5F.2a Second Issue Progress Proof Gem New.</B></I> Printed on bright yellow paper and identical to the unique item #52 from Ed Frossard's 1893 listing except that this piece has the George Washington vignette, although that vignette is mounted to, rather than a printed part of, this piece. This is one of the earliest progress proofs of the Second Issue, bearing the earlier act date of July 17, 1862 and lacking many elements of the finished plate. This is also part of a very short series of proofs that had the words "Engraved and Printed at the Treasury Department." printed outside the boundary of the note in a separate block rather than in its final position below the enabling date. A spectacular piece that Tom acquired when he purchased Doug Hales' incredible collection. The original embossing appears pressed through the heavy yellow paper. The ideal companion piece to the white-paper note in the next lot. In fact, these apparently resided together at some point in the past, as each has a light pencil notation in the upper-right corner of its blank back: a "19" on this yellow-paper note and a "20" on the white-paper piece.
