c1880 This archive contains approximately 90 pieces and includes letters, checks (about39) and documents, among which are deeds from Colusa County, as well as real estate purchase agreements from Easton, Eldridge Real Estate Co. that was selling lots on Edgar Mills’ tract, title papers, and a linen map showing lands owned by Mills along the West Side and Mendocino Railroad. Edgar Mills (1828-1893) was the younger brother of banker and philanthropist Darius Ogden Mills (1825-1910), and another brother James. Edgar was a trained civil engineer and conducted the first surveys of the Feather and Sacramento rivers for Sam Brannan and John A. Sutter. Edgar and James were the first to arrive in California in 1849 and D.O. joined them sometime later. In 1852 Edgar and his brother James established a branch of the Sacramento Bank in Columbia, Tuolumne County. Upon James’ death in 1856, the bank was sold. Eventually Edgar became a one-third owner and director of the National Bank of D.O. Mills in 1862—ultimately becoming president—and also served on the California State Board of Agriculture in 1868. When D.O. returned to New York in 1873, Edgar stayed behind in California and took charge of the family businesses of banking, real estate development and railroads. In 1879 he relocated to the Bay Area where he lived until his death in 1893 [Ref: Edgar Mills papers, 1852-1888.
