3 5/8" tall. Eight years after his arrival in Miles City on May 1, 1884, the late Miles W. Milligan, then a lad of 18 years of age, with rare foresight and an unbounded faith in the new land of his adoption, began to lay the foundation of the present properties embraced within the ownership of the Milligan Estate. In 1948, that included the Milligan Mansion, the largest private home in Miles City, located on North Twelfth Street, and a number of Main Street properties, including two hotels. The project to update the hotel had begun much earlier but then World War II arrived, making it impossible to get materials and labor, and all work had to stop. During the pause, Mr. Milligan passed away but the project continued. The Miles Howard was finally remodeled into a new, modern hotel, with all the amenities including barber and beauty shop, a fine new bar, the Golden Spur, and a large and popular restaurant, the Metropolitan Cafe, now updated for the times. The Miles Howard was named after Milligan’s son, who died in the influenza epidemic of 1918, was on the south side of Main Street. Across the street and west half a block was the new Milligan hotel. According to the article, it was scheduled to be updated as the Miles Howard had been.
