Millican, TX- Fletcher & Wheat $1 May 10, 1862 Medlar 3
A rare piece of merchant scrip from this once prosperous community, which, in the 1860's was reputedly the largest city in Texas north of Galveston and Houston. From 1860 to around 1867 the city was the terminus of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, and during the Civil War the community was the site of a training area for 5,000 Confederate troops. The city waned in importance, however, when the railroad was extended to nearby Bryan in 1866, and an 1867 yellow fever epidemic further decimated the town. From a population of 3,000 in 1864 the city slowly atrophied, and by 1990 the population had fallen to only 100 inhabitants. This is the only piece of scrip from here that we have ever seen offered for sale. Very Good.
From The William A.
