Lot of 5, 1872-1899: 1) 2 Page expense sheet dated Dec. 6, 1899, 1 page showing salaries owed, page two shows payment received, signed by E.A. Hicks, both from Bakersfield, Cal., and stamped in the lower r/h corner in blue ink M & L Dec. 19, 1899. 2) Bill for Hauling Hay, dated Sept. 9, 1872. 3) Medical treatment bill for Katie Miller, dated April 4, 1885 from German Hospital, S.F., for 25 days. Stamped in blue ink on lower l/h corner Paid Apr.20, 1885. 4) Check, Miller & Lux, from Santa Rita Ranch, dated Dec. 25, 1880, for $100.00, signed & issued to Chas. Marfield, has nice litho of Bull. 5) Check, Miller & Lux, litho of Bull on l/h side, from Los Pesos Farm, dated April 9, 1880, check made out to M. Silvia, payment of Thirty Five ( half silver) Dollars. Charles Lux (1823-1888) was born in Germany, came to the U.S. when just 15 years old. He joined the Gold Rush in 1850. He opened a Butcher shop in S.F. & invested his money in the cattle business. With a partner( Miller) he started "Miller & Lux", by 1863 it was one of the largest cattle & ranching empires in the West. The Firm owned 10 Ranches in three states, totaling some 600,000 acres of land. Lux died in 1888.
