LS, one page, 8 x 10, January 24, 1850. Vice President Fillmore writes to Commodore William Salter. In full: “I have yours of the 22d inst. and deeply as I sympathize with Capt. Bell in the prostration of the prospects of his son, yet I do not feel at liberty to bring the matter of his dismissal again to the attention of the Secy. of the Navy unless evidence can be furnished to show that the Report of the Examiners is false. Any further interference on my part, without such proof, would justly subject me to the charge of impertinence, and be highly improper. I regret extremely that I am compelled to take this view of the case as I am sincerely anxious, if I could do it with propriety, to serve you and Capt. Bell in this unfortunate affair.” Accompanied by a letter to Fillmore sent from the Navy Department stating Bell “cannot be reinstated.” In fine condition, with intersecting folds, one through a single letter of signature, a few creases, and a bit of light soiling. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
