Millard Fillmore Officer Commission DS Millard Fillmore Officer Commission Document Signed.
Millard Fillmore Officer Commission Document Signed. One page, 13.25" x 16.5", vellum, partly printed, Washington, September 2, 1852. An appointment of Stephen V. Benét as "...Second Lieutenant in the Ordnance Department..." effective July 10, 1851. Countersigned at the bottom by Charles Conrad as secretary of war and in the docketing by Samuel Cooper as Adjutant General. Cooper went on to be the highest-ranking general in the Confederate Army (the first of eight to be promoted to full general). Fillmore became president when Zachary Taylor died while in office. His attempts to reach a compromise on the slavery issue made him unpopular with both sides and he didn't even get the Whig Party's nomination to run for a full term in 1852. A later attempt to be elected president on the Know-Nothing Party ticket also failed. The document is in very good condition with a few very minor holes along the horizontal fold; the paper seal is intact. Matted and framed to an overall size of 19" x 22".
