Millard Fillmore Autograph Letter Signed "Fillmore." Three pages, 8" x 10", Washington, February 10, 1838 to a correspondent on political matters and making an oblique reference to the Canadian Rebellion of 1837-8. He writes, in part: "...I hope you will not tale about discontinuing your daily Bulletins till I give you notice...At present they are the only regular periodicals which I take, and Mrs. F thinks them very interesting and I think them not only interesting but indispensable. As for the daily papers, they are good when they come...occasionally they slip into the unsearched corners of Amos Saddle bags, and they are not found till some days, or they play truant on the road, and stop to inform some 'rascally postmaster' of the state of the war, that the sufferings our patriots is intolerable and that it is impossible to penetrate Canada..." The rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada were mostly crushed in 1837. Many survivors fled across the border into the United States where they found support from vigilante groups who wished to see Canada break free of British rule. These efforts culminated in an invasion in November 1838; the rebels were defeated and captured at the Battle of the Windmill. Fillmore continues his letter by commenting upon a pending lawsuit and other local matters. Lightly toned at folds, else fine condition.

Shipping: Flat Material, Small (view shipping information)
