Autograph endorsement signed as president with his initials, "M. F.," in the margin of a letter written to him by Francis Leland, one page both sides, 7.75 x 10, January 16, 1851. Leland complains of the recent appointment of "Mr. E. A. Saunders to the Consulate of Buenos Aires & the removal of Col. Jos. Graham." Fillmore writes, in full: "Ans. My object is to appt. none but competent & fit persons. But your letter is too vague. In what respect is he unqualified or unfit?" In fine condition.
