Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 692 $20 Indian Chief Grades Select AU
Military Payment Certificate (MPC) Series 692 $20 Indian Chief Grades Select AU. This is one of the most recognizable military payment certificates out there. It has been used in lots of reference literature. The front of each 692 $20 MPC shows a portrait of an Indian chief. The back has a picture of a dam. The two images don’t really go with each other, but they are both attractive. Series 692 military payment certificates might be described as the most American of any of the MPC notes issued between 1946 and 1973. The designers at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing used distinctly American vignettes like eagles, buffalos, and Native Americans. These were first introduced into circulation on October 7th, 1970 and withdrawn on March 15th, 1973. This is the last official series of military payment certificates ever issued by the United States. Military payment certificates, or MPC, were a form of currency used to pay U.S. military personnel in certain foreign countries. They were used in one area or another from a few months after the end of World War II until a few months after the end of U.S. participation in the Vietnam War – from 1946 until 1973. MPC utilized layers of line lithography to create colorful banknotes that could be produced cheaply. Fifteen series of MPCs were created. However, only 13 series were issued. The remaining two were largely destroyed, although some examples remain. Among the 13 released series a total of 94 notes are recognized.
