Militaria and Weapons: c. 1700s, Iroquois Trade Belt Axe, Dutch East India Company, Choice Very Fine
c. 1700s, Iroquois Trade Belt Axe, Dutch East India Company, Choice Very Fine. 15" wooden handle, 6.5"-long iron blade. Nice reddish-brown patina, and a shiny finish to blade, which also has a stick figure deeply stamped onto the right side of the blade. This figure symbolizes the Iroquois nation. The axe head is very lightly pitted, and the stamping is very deep and easily read. See George Neumann's book on Revolutionary War Weapons for details, as this axe head is similar to several found in his book. The handle is not original but was put on during the 1930s in the correct fashion, with the flats facing front and rear. Ex-Anderson Collection of Baltimore, MD.
