c. 1820s, Military Uniform Buttons of Alexander J. Dallas, Lot of 65, Choice Extremely Fine. A collection of 7 sets of brass and gilt buttons worn by Alexander J. Dallas during his illustrious naval career. A prized assortment of various buttons produced by companies in London, England, and Waterbury, Connecticut. Most with the impression of the U.S. Seal, and others with naval insignia. Includes two oak leaf clusters. Alexander J. Dallas, (whose father of the same name served as James Madison's Secretary of the Treasury), served with distinction in the War of 1812, in the operations against Algiers in 1815, and in the suppression of piracy in the West Indies. He established and commanded the Pensacola Navy Yard from 1832 to 1843. In 1835, he was ordered to additional duty in command of the West India Squadron and supported General Winfield Scott during the war with the Seminole Indians in Florida. In recognition of his outstanding service, the Government named a fort for him on the eastern coast of Florida. (65 pieces)
