Charles Coggshall and Al Furstnow were partners in Miles, City, Montana in 1890. In 1895 Cogshall purchased a saddle shop owned by Hugh Moran and became independent. Coggshall was a prosperous businessman whohired the master saddle makers available to work in his shop. He is known for the plate rigging that today is referred to as the “Montana flat plate.” The Miles City saddle makers have been given credit for solving thedispute between the Texas and Oregon center fire to the “Montana Three Quarter” rigging. His foreman was Clem Kathmann who was considered to be the finest saddle craftsman in the Northwest. Miles City was a terminalfor the early cattle drives that came primarily from Texas for the free grazing on Montana. Miles City became known as the Western saddle capitol of the United States. Cloggshall sold his company out to KlemKathman, Frank Jelinek, and Bert Coleman. This saddle is from the 1909-1910 era and is a wonderful example of the Miles City Montana Saddlery.
