Mildred Pierce Joan Crawford Costume
The apron that Joan Crawford wore in "Mildred Pierce". As motion picture icon Joan Crawford loved to say: "Revenge is sweet!". And she uttered this famous line after receiving the Oscar for Best Actress in the title role of Warner Brother's 1945 now classic "Mildred Pierce". Having been one of the original stars at MGM who helped enormously to make them the supreme studio of the world, studio president Louie B. Mayer coldly threw her out without as much as a thank you in the mid-1940's. Devastated, she accepted what was considered a "B" movie based on James M. Cane's tear-jerker novel (with a screenplay by the uncredited William Faulkner!). In the film, Crawford, known for her glamour roles, is suddenly a widow and is reduced to working as a lowly waitress to support her family. In one of the most famous scenes (actually a stunning montage), wearing a waitress outfit, she puts on a simple apron, symbolizing her "fall from grace", and thrusts herself into the fire of a busy greasy spoon. The apron also symphonized Crawford's own life, having to "lower" herself to a second rate studio, with smaller budgets, and less glamorous roles. That is what makes this apron, worn by Ms. Crawford in the movie a great piece of movie memorabilia. And of course the fact that she won the Oscar for what was supposed to be the beginning of the end for her career, makes this apron that much more powerful. This event is played out as only Faye Dunaway could in the cult classic movie of Crawford's life "Mommie Dearest". There is a small stain in the front of the apron, mostly likely from storage and not from the production.
