The detailed ink work on the city and elevated train blends perfectly with Kaluta's deft use of wash on the main figure of the Shadow. It is also one of the most famous and most reproduced covers of the 1970s. Kaluta employed an unusual technique on his early <B>Shadow</B></I> covers: The figure of the Shadow was rendered in wash, really a monochromatic painting, while on another art board he rendered the inked background. The originals of all these covers exist as two separate pieces of art making them difficult to properly display--EXCEPT for this one. When Kaluta sold the original art for this cover nearly 20 years ago, the buyer had him carefully cut out the blank center of the inked art board, the one with the cityscape. Now, when placed on top of the wash drawing, the result is a single, stunning piece of art. Measuring approximately 11.5" x 17.25" overall, this piece is in excellent condition and is signed by the artist. A truly iconic image, this piece may never again be offered for public sale. A copy of the comic, signed by Mike Kaluta, is included with this lot. <B>Estimate: $25,000-up</B> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><!--<a name="PricesRealized"></a> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" bgcolor="#000000"> <tr> <td width="100%"> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="3"> <tr> <td width="100%" bgcolor="#79735C"> <a name="PR"> <font face="arial" size="3" color="#FFFFFF"> <b>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</b> </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#F6F6ED"> No Prior Data Recorded </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <font face="arial" size="1""> PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
