Irish boxer (1858–1893) whose foot was amputated following an accident in 1893, followed by the development of tuberculosis and his death. ALS, two pages, lightly-lined on two adjoining sheets, 4.5 x 7.25, November 23, 1891 (possibly misdated). Cleary writes an unknown person called “Friend Yank.” Unedited text reads in part: “I received your letter but was two sick and sore to answer but I feel pretty well now but after 4 operations I lost my foot up two ankle how is Jerry tell him I will be a little slow going up hill. I have a show here on friday night and expect to have a good one there will be quite a crowd from Phila so I will say good by.” In very good condition, with three horizontal folds with a few small tears and holes along the fold lines, and moderate soiling and toning. An extremely rare letter from the bare-knuckle fighter.
