Herb Mignery grew up on the family ranch in Nebraska. Like many Western artists, Mignery honed his skills in the armed forces, then found work in commercial illustration. In 1983, he was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America. In his book on the CAA, Michael Duty states that Mignery is a “man of many talents” and goes on to quote the artist on his approach: “Overall design is very important to me. I start with an abstract form and use opposing and intersecting lines to achieve movement and add interest to a sculpture.” (pp. 74-75)
Keep that in mind. Now look at the images of Checkmate. Cast in an edition of only three, plus one artist’s proof, Ed Trumble considers Herb Mignery’s Checkmate to be the “finest piece of monumental cowboy sculpture ever done!” Honoring the daily tribulations of the working cowboy, Checkmate describes a dangerous situation that ordinary mortals can hardly imagine.
Yet there is something more, something in the composition, the arrangement of man and animal, something in the way they lean against one another, force opposing force, balance on the verge of becoming unbalance, that recalls ancient depictions of charioteers in races, in battle, or out hunting, as they strain to contain, to reign in and over animals whose sole wish is to be unleashed. ‘Monumental’ is the typical word for a work like Checkmate, but ‘classical’ might not be unmerited.
