Midas,NV - Elko County - 1915 - Mule Train Hauling Lumber and Engine Photograph :
Four photographs depicting mule trains and their loads. Photographs measure 5”x4”, no matte, medium contrast—tends toward the grays, and focus is sharp. No photographer identified. Photographs one and two show an eighteen mule train hauling an Allis Chalmers engine. On the reverse is written, “This load weighs 21 tons, it is a 185 hp Allis Chalmers oil engine. The lead horses as you can see are off of the road in order to keep the load from cutting the bank on the up hillside.” Allis Chalmers was a company established in the 1840s. By 1914 the company began manufacturing agricultural equipment and became best known for their bright orange tractors. Photograph three shows a mule train hauling lumber. On the reverse is written, “A load of lumber for mill construction, also my mansion”. The house in the background is presumably the “mansion” that the author is referring to. Midas was located 62 miles west-northwest of Elko. Midas boomed 1907-08, but excitement faded quickly due to its remote location and low quality ore. The mining camp survived until 1915, when it gained a second wind. These photographs depict operations at Midas as the second boom came to fruition. The lumber and engine are likely being brought to Midas for construction of the fifty ton cyanide mill built in 1915. Photo four is of a foal standing in a bucket.
