Mid-century Japanese Satsuma Dishes (13)
Offered in this lot are a collection of Mid-century Japanese Satsuma Dishes (13). Five (5) small plates (Kozara, ??) feature iron red colours, one plate has the Koshida company crest and hiragana characters. Two colourful bowls and a handled creamer incorporate gold gilt artistically. One mid-sized pitcher. Four demitasse cups feature familial themes, all dishes are very colourfully decorated. Ceramics bearing the Satsuma Kamon were made well outside of the borders of Kyushu. Items for export were often decorated with obscure and unrelated themes chosen for their drama and exoticism. These wares thus inspired a whole design movement in the West known as Japonism. These Satsuma dishes are in very nice overall condition, chipping observed, no other obvious marring noted. Largest bowl measures 2"D x 7" diameter. Small plates are 5.5" diameter each, creamer is 3.75"H, 3.5"W. Mid-sized pitcher is 5.5"H, 5.5"W.
