Mid 19th Century London Production Brass Navigational Sextant with Case

Engraved in script on the silver inlaid brass arc, "Spencer Browning & Co. London". Clifton, "Directory of British Scientific Instruments Makers", documents Spencer Browning & Co., 1840-1870. The instrument is patinated brass with an ebony handle and silver graduated scale. It is complete with full sets of both horizon and backsight colored glass filters, three telescopes, solar filters, an adjusting pin and a swing-away magnifier for viewing the vernier scale.

Very good, with speckling on the original gold lacquered telescope and minor oxidation on the frame. The original mahogany case has a shrinkage crack to the top but is stable with handle and both hooks intact.
