Rectangular olive green snuff box decorated with a micro mosaic architectural image of The Vatican's St. Peters square. The box has silver trim, hinges and latch. It is hallmarked on both outer edges of raised silver rim, on one side with a pair of crossed-keys corresponding to the Coat of Arms of The Vatican City, and on the other hard-to-read numbers (possibly indicating silver content). In the 19th Century, the Papal workshop excelled in a technique called mosaico minuto and produced portrait medallions that rivaled the quality of 18th Century miniature portraits as well as tables and snuff boxes decorated with encrusted mosaics. Micro mosaic objects were sought after by 19th Century foreign visitors making the Grand Tour of Europe. Stone box has minor losses and lid stone has center crack where mosaic pieces have separated and mosaic on one side of obelisk is missing. Please ask questions, request additional photos and shipping costs before buying.
