(Old King Cole, 1935) An extremely rare papier mache and wood animated window display created by the Old King Cole company for The Walt Disney Studios. Between 1935 and 1938, the Old King Cole Company was licensed to produce store displays featuring Disney characters using a special type of papier mache called "laminate." Their first displays were images of Mickey Mouse. These displays were static, or could be animated for an additional cost. Disney's merchandising representative Kay Kamen would market these large displays to store owners to help increase their foot traffic. The displays were extremely successful; however, they were not made to last and many were discarded after their initial use. The few that still exist today are extremely sought after, surviving as a testament to the success of Mickey Mouse as a brand, and the advertising genius of Kay Kamen. Measuring approximately 40"x40", the Mickey display is in good used condition with minor surface wear throughout from use. A small break in the tail has been professionally repaired. The original motor and metal armature that once animated the display are still connected to the reverse, however some of these pieces will likely need to be serviced or replaced for the display to animate again. The display has been beautifully mounted in a plexiglas box for display. This item may require special shipping arrangements, please inquire for details and estimates.
