Notarized DS, one page, 8 x 13, August 29, 1960. In part: “I, Mickey Mantle, residing at Dallas, Texas, have made, constituted and appointed and by these presents do make, constitute and appoint Abram Friedman of 635 Madison Avenue, City and State of New York, my true and lawful attorney for me, and in my name, place and stead to represent me in all proceedings before the Internal Revenue Service in connection with my income tax returns for calendar years ended 12/31/1957, 12/31/1958, 12/31/1959, before the informal conferee.” In fine condition.

The day before, Mantle had played in both games of a Sunday doubleheader at Yankee Stadium against the Detroit Tigers, with the second game being one of his best all year, powering the first place Yankees to an 8-5 victory. The next day was an off-day for the Bronx Bombers, so the Mick had time to go to his lawyer’s New York office and gave him power of attorney in connection with the aforementioned federal income tax returns. The 1960 season turned out to be a pretty good one for the Yankee legend. Although financially, Mantle accepted a $7,000 pay cut following a lackluster 1959 reason, he rebounded with an American League-leading 40 home runs, just missing out on that season’s MVP award. A unique document from one of the Commerce Comet’s greatest years.
