Michael Whelan - Sign of the Salamander Cover Illustration Original Art (1975). Michael Whelan is undoubtedly one of finest fantasy and science fiction cover artists in history, with fourteen Hugo World Science Fiction and three Howard World Fantasy Awards to his credit. In 1975, Kane Edward Wagner's Sign of the Salamander was published by Gary Hoppenstand, a serial written in pulp style about the adventures of John Chance, an occult investigator. This unpublished cover painting by Michael Whelan is a well-executed pastiche of Wagner's 1930s pulp hero, although it wasn't used as the final cover. The art measures 12" x 15.5" and is in Excellent condition. This early Whelan provides insight into the extraordinary artwork of a man who has been honored time and time again by the voters of the World Science Fiction Convention and provided inspiration for so many aspiring speculative fiction artists.
